NHMA / OMH College Health Scholars Program

The National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) and the Health and Human Services, Office of Minority Health have officially concluded the 5 year grant-funded College Health Scholars Program on June 30th, 2022. The NHMA College Health Scholars Program was a unique collaborative program with the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the University of the Incarnate Word (San Antonio, TX), Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (Los Angeles, CA), Great Minds in STEM (MentorNet), and the New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM).

The program’s purpose was to increase the diversity of the health workforce with Hispanic physicians, health professionals, and scientist/researchers by providing resources to pre-health/science college students that address academic preparation for graduate school, including math and science, professional and personal development, and financial aid resources. The Program’s overarching goal was to increase the number of Hispanic students who are committed to increasing health equity to apply successfully to medical school, other health professions school or to graduate school in science and research careers in the United States.

The CHSP prepared students for the 5 following career paths by providing them a personal mentor, curated quarterly webinars, a virtual student group, and other resources to support professional and academic development.
  • Medicine
  • Nursing
  • Dentistry
  • Graduate Science
  • Public Health
