About Us

The National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) Government Affairs team serves as a voice for Latino physicians and the communities they serve. We lead national, state and local policy efforts to advance health equity, improve access to care and shape a health care system that reflects the needs of Latino communities across the country.

Our work includes engaging with the White House, Congress, state legislatures and federal agencies to advocate for policies that strengthen the Hispanic health workforce, improve prevention and care delivery, promote culturally competent care and reduce health disparities. We provide policy recommendations, mobilize physician leaders and coordinate advocacy efforts through Congressional briefings, testimonies and coalition building.

The NHMA Policy and Advocacy Committee, made up of our members, is a core group of physician leaders who help guide our national strategy and serve as trusted messengers and experts on pressing health issues facing Latino communities. Their insights shape our federal policy priorities and deepen our impact across chapters and communities.

Since NHMA’s founding by a group of Latino physician leaders at the White House in 1993, advocacy has remained at the heart of our mission. From our early work with HRSA to influence medical education diversity, to shaping provisions in the Affordable Care Act (ACA), to leading vaccine outreach campaigns, our policy efforts continue to grow.

We invite you to join us in advocating for a more equitable health system. Whether you’re a physician, policymaker or community partner, we welcome your voice and collaboration.

Policy Priorities

NHMA’s advocacy focuses on three key policy priorities: health equity, health workforce diversity and women’s health. These priorities guide our engagement with policymakers, federal agencies and national coalitions.
